World’s best 10 biggest smartphone companies
The global smartphone market further evolved in the year 2016. Features like metal-build, fingerprint sensor and 2GB RAM have become almost mainstream.
In terms of smartphone sales, the year 2016 can be termed as the 'year of Chinese smartphone makers'.
For, as many as three Chinese companies kept their presence intact in the top five smartphone makers ranking.
So, here's over to the world's 10 biggest smartphone companies.
Samsung
Samsung
Samsung retained its number one position in the worldwide smartphone market with a 21% share in Q3 2016.
This retention of position comes in the midst of the Galaxy Note 7 recall, thanks to the continued success of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge devices.
Samsung's streamlined portfolio of devices, including the affordable J-series, proved successful in many mid-tier markets that were typically dominated by local brands.
Apple
Apple shipped a total of 45.5 million units, which is a 5.3% decline year on year from 2015Q3.
The new iPhone SE did well in both emerging and developed markets.
The iPhone 6S continued to be its bestselling device this quarter, followed by its newest device, the iPhone 7.
Huawei
Chinese tech company Huawei retained its third position in the global smartphone share.
The major credit for its sales goes to the company’s mid-range and high-end smartphones.
The two segments together account for the company’s 57.2% smartphone shipments during the Q32016.
Oppo
OPPO, which ousted Lenovo in Q1 2016 to be on the 4th spot, has ever since managed to retain its position.
With a share of 7.1% of the smartphone market, OPPO’s main play is in China. With aggressive marketing it continues to find success in Asian markets outside China.
The R9 followed by the A33 were its top devices last quarter.
Vivo
Vivo sits at the fifth position, ousting Xiaomi. The company has a global market share of 5.9% in Q3 2016.
Like Oppo, Vivo too has China as its key market for selling smartphones.
The company has also grown in India and Myanmar, with Vivo X6 being its top-selling smartphone.
OnePlus
OnePlus has been known for its value-for-money ‘flagship killer’ smartphones.
The company's OnePlus 3 too stuck to the credo. Among the very first smartphones to boast of 6GB RAM and Snapdragon 820 processor.
The Chinese company recently launched successor to OnePlus 3. The new smartphone, dubbed OnePlus 3T, boasts of enhanced specifications and a higher price tag.
Xiaomi
Xiaomi smartphones made a comeback in the Indian smartphone market in the year 2016.
The company’s flagship smartphones Mi 5 along with 'value-for-money budget' offering Redmi Note 3 achieved good sales numbers in India.
Lenovo
Chinese smartphone maker Lenovo though lost its position in the top 5 globally, the company continues to do well in the Indian market.
The company this year also became the first to collaborate with Google for its Tango augmented-reality based platform launching Phab 2 Pro smartphone.
Lenovo’s subsidiary Motorola too saw a good growth in India and other markets. The company launched the world’s thinnest handset Moto Z during the year, along with budget devices like Moto G4 Plus and Moto M.
LG
LG took everyone by surprise this year by launching an all-modular flagship smartphone, the LG G5.
However, the handset is said to have not brought the desired fortunes for the company.
However, the latest flagship LG V20 appears promising and may help the company boost sales numbers.
Sony
Sony recently confirmed that it will only sell premium smartphones in India and other select countries.
The Japanese company recently launched its Xperia XZ smartphone. Sony may face few bumps in the year 2017 as the company focuses only on high-end devices.
